"...One of the most nostalgic is the St. Moritz Lodge, which, as the a name suggests, looks like an Americanized version of a Swiss Chalet, with knotty gray walls and bright blue trim. The lodge has 36 rooms: the cheapest, a hostel-style room with three twin beds and a shared bath, starts at $39. Private rooms with double beds, flat-screen TV and private bathrooms start at $99. There is also a small white tiled steam room and and outdoor heated pool with Jacuzzi jets that is surrounded by purple plum trees and a killer view."

Aspen on $250 a Day?

"Economy lodging exists for inexpensive rooms online. Both sites pointed to Aspen's only youth hostel, the St. Moritz Lodge, 334 West Hyman, (800) 247-2069, where bunk-style rooms with shared bathrooms go for as little as $30 a night during the early season (rates jump during Christmas week and then drop slightly."
"A private room seemed worth the extra money. Only five blocks- from downtown, beneath the steep, rocky slopes of Shadow Mountain, the hostel, a two-story European-style lodge, oozed with snow-covered gingerbread-house charm. Inside the lobby were all the standard Alpine touches: stone fireplace, wood paneled walls and a front desk finished in an earthy, speckled granite."
" When we walked in at 8 p.m. on Friday, a random assortment of international travelers (from Japan, Argentina and Australia) sat around the coffee table drinking bottled beer and eating steak they had cooked on the grill outside. When I checked in and told the man in the office I didn't have a credit card because my wallet had been stolen the week before, he shrugged and said, "Bummer," and gave me the keys to our room. I assumed it would be O.K. to pay in cash when we checked out (and it was) because he didn't ask me for a dime."
"The room was much bigger and cleaner than I had expected, with a big bay window, two twin beds, a large desk, television, clos¬et, full-size bathroom and views of the mountain."

St. Moritz Lodge, Aspen, COI've been a regular at this place for a decade now, and I'm still smitten. Its groovy, '70s-meets-Switzerland ambience; friendly, helpful staff; clean, well-lit rooms, and free mega-breakfast kick ass...what's not to love? It's just a few minutes walk from the slopes, and free parking is plentiful. A dorm bed is $44, and a private room/shared bath $95, high season.
